Axel de Jenlis

Axel de Jenlis was born in 1989 in St-Germain-en-Laye, France. He began to study the cello at the age of six at the Rixensart Academy, Belgium in the class of Alexandre Debrus. For the beginning of the 2007 academic year, Axel was admitted to the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory under Professor Anatoly Pavlovich Nikitin. He graduated with honours as a performance artist, and pedagogue in 2012. He was then admitted in Hélène Dautry’s class in the Ecole Normale Alfred Cortot (Paris). Masterclasses include those with Mark Drobinsky, Natalia Gutman, Philippe Muller, Jérôme Pernoo…

 

Axel gave some solo and chamber music concerts in Europe, Russia, Asia, Africa and Latin America. He took part in several major festivals: Festival de Wallonnie, Festival International Albert Roussel, Mravinsky International Festival, Festival Internacional de Ushuaia…

 

He performed in some of the world’s leading venues such as: big hall of the Centre for Fine Arts (recital in 2010) and Flagey in Brussels, the Cortot Hall in Paris, the Oriental Art Center in Shanghai, the Philharmonic halls in St. Petersburg, the big hall of the military school in Santiago…

 

As a soloist, he played concertos accompanied by the Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes de Bruxelles, Orchestre Philharmonique du département de l’Oise, Orchestre de Sciences Po Paris, Festival de Ushuaia Orchestra, Ensemble DeSaFiNaDo, the Youth Orchestra of El Salvador… Axel is also a member of the St. Petersburg Cello Ensemble.

 

In August of 2009 He was professor at a short course organised by the International Music Academy in Dinant, Belgium and in 2010 he gave some master classes at the Conservatory in Santiago de Chile. During the summer 2014, he was in charge of establishing a project of social inclusion through music in El Salvador.

 

Axel gave interviews and recorded for different radios and TV programs around the world. Since 2011, Axel has been the artistic director of the “Festival International de Musique de Chambre Est-Ouest” in Louvain-La-Neuve (Belgium).

 

Axel has had the opportunity to collaborate with famous contemporary composers such as Jacqueline Fontyn who dedicated him her work for cello and harp Eglogue in 2013.

 

In 2014, he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration (specializing in culture administration) from the Paris Institute of Political Studies. In 2015, he graduated from the University of Cambridge (Master of Philosophy in Music Studies).

 

He currently plays a 1913 Hilaire Darche cello, lent by the Carlo Van Neste Foundation.
